Current standards of nursing practice in providing safe, high quality, And evidence-based care to endoscopy patients in the United Kingdom

Charmaine Oliva

Endoscopy units are quite busy, with a high turnover of patients. With the increasing demand for services, as well as the challenges of maintaining safe staffing levels and adequate resources whilst in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, safe, high quality and evidence-based care should be of utmost importance to achieve the best patient outcomes and experience. This narrative review of literature provides a framework on current best nursing care practice within endoscopy units in the United Kingdom. With emphasis on patient-centred care, relevant information for endoscopy nurses were obtained from academic sources, as well as guidelines from the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council and the British Society of Gastroenterology, to name a few. It aims to provide current information to empower endoscopy nurses to practice with confidence, knowing that they are providing safe and effective care to their patients. A systematic review of literature has been performed to provide a complete, exhaustive summary of published and unpublished evidence. Due to limited information resources because of the COVID-19 pandemic, most literature reviewed have been procured from online sources – the NMC, BSG, and ESGE websites to name a few, and were used as the basis for the development of statements. Keeping abreast with all the current developments in the fast-changing field of endoscopy is a must to provide the best standards of care to our patients. The importance of knowing the existing systems and processes in place to keep our patients and working environments safe cannot be emphasised enough.
